Always perform this element in the company of a coach or spotter. Stretch your quadriceps, calves, back and arms before attempting this element, to avoid injury.

A front flip, sometimes called a front somi or front tuck, is an acrobatic element often used in gymnastics and cheerleading. In gymnastics, it is a basic move used on almost every apparatus -- floor, beam, vault and uneven bars. A proper front flip requires a forceful takeoff, so you have the ability to rotate your body in mid-air. In cheerleading, this move is used as part of an overall floor routine and is occasionally used as a dismount maneuver from a group pyramid. Beginners will learn how to do a front flip on a padded floor before moving on to apparatus mastery.

Step 1

Stand on a padded or carpeted floor that is unobstructed by furniture. Take five to six running steps to gain speed and momentum. Push hard off the balls of your feet and jump with your feet together as high as possible into the air. Drive your heels into the ground to gain the momentum to begin the rotation.
